How Did People Take Part?

How have people been involved so far?

Between submissions via this website, call-outs on Kate’s social media and interviews with Aileen and Molly, the team have been delighted to hear the experiences of over 20 people. These members of the weight loss group community have shared snippets of their journey, perhaps for the first time, and have been genuine, honest and brave. It’s been a humbling experience and the team feel proud to have helped participants feel empowered by the process. Thank you to everyone who took part so far.

Individuals also submitted tracks that really underpinned key moments from their weight-loss journey - think songs that you dance around your kitchen to! Lots of fantastic songs were submitted, with tracks including ‘This Is Me’ from the Greatest Showman, ‘Tubthumping’ by Chumbawamba and ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ by Queen, and more.

What did you do with their stories?

The stories collected have become part of the show’s initial development. The experiences and reflections that people shared with the team have inspired different elements of the musical, from character traits and specific scenes to the narrative arc of the show.

Everything that was submitted or recorded has been, and will be, kept confidential and treated with respect and care. Kate knows what it is like to be part of weight loss groups and how much respect participants have for each other, and this process is no different.

No one individual or story will be highlighted or traced back to those who shared their stories with us. This show is not about individual weight loss or gain (that’s part of the reason it’s called Off the Scales). It's about the impact these groups have on our lives.

  • “Molly was friendly and easy to talk to, which gave me the confidence to tell my story in full. It was an experience that was empowering for me as I hadn't spoken of my whole story before.”

  • “Aileen allowed the interview to take its course, following up on statements I made whilst still keeping structure. I found it empowered me and it was enjoyable.”
